Interview Mistake?

Eight days ago I had an interview for a full-time speech therapy position which I am dying to get.  I absolutely LOVED the place and the people, and everything they had to say, but I don't know if they loved me back.  I have not heard from them yet and I am thinking this may be why...

My interview took place shortly after Auburn won the national championship.  It was a HUGE to-do here.  Well, during my interview he was casually talking about the game and laughing and then he abruptly stopped. He looked me dead in the eye with complete seriousness and asked, "Are you an Auburn fan?"

I thought that maybe I should fake it, say yes, and then he will immediately hire me on the spot!  But since I am the WORST liar on the planet, and maybe even beyond that, I said, "Well, I went to Florida State, so SEC football is all really new to me."

"Ohhh, you're an ACC kinda girl."

As I have mentioned before, college football is kind of like religion here.  You have to be very careful how you approach the topic.  I hope I didn't offend him!

Otherwise, the interview went very very well.  So if I end up not getting the job, I know why.

Note to self: Become very familiar with SEC football immediately or you will never ever get anywhere in life in the South.

  2. LOL! I would HOPE that wouldn't keep you from getting the job... but you're right - Alabama is a bit attached to their football.

And, after all, in that whole long Human-Resourcey Equal Opportunity Employer quote of "We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, religion, etc etc etc", it says NOTHING about promising not to discriminate based on football team.

By the way, welcome to Alabama Bloggers!! I hope you're able to meet a lot of your blogging neighbors!
